2. The air pressure pushing up on the cardboard is higher than that of the water pushing down from inside the jar.
向上推紙板的氣壓要比罐子里向下推的水的氣壓高。
that用來替代前面提到的不可數名詞或單數可數名詞，以避免重復。
The price of rice is lower than that (the price) of meat.

3. Scientific discoveries are making our lives better and better. 科學發現正在讓我們的生活變得越來越好。
（1）discovery可數名詞，意為“發現，發覺”，其復數形式為discoveries。其動詞為discover，后跟名詞、代詞或賓語從句。
This is an important discovery. 這是一個重要的發現。
They have discovered our secrets.
他們已經發現了我們的秘密。
（2）better and better“越來越好”，其構成為“比較級+and+比較級”，意為“越來越……”。當比較級用more構成時，要用結構“more and more+形容詞/副詞原級”。
The weather is getting colder and colder.
天氣變得越來越冷。
I hope my village becomes more and more beautiful.
我希望我的村子變得越來越漂亮。
