1.Once upon a time,there was a large,lovely garden.
once upon a time意為“從前,很久以前”,也可以說:long ago/long,long ago或者a long time ago等,這是講故事常用的開頭語。
2.Its trees were filled with singing birds.
句中be filled with意為“充滿”,其中的filled是動詞fill的過去分詞,起形容詞作用,用在系動詞be后作表語,此結構在意義上與be full of同義。
3.How happy they were!
本句為感嘆句,其構成為:How+形容詞/副詞+主語+謂語!
4.“What are you doing here?”the giant cried in a loud voice.
in a loud voice意為“大聲地”,與in a high voice同義,反義短語為in a low voice,意為“低聲地”。
5.They ran away and dared not come back.
run away意為“逃跑,走掉,逃脫”。
dare在這里作情態動詞,通常用于疑問句或否定句中。dare not意為“不敢”,后接動詞原形。在肯定句中常用其實義動詞的用法,后常接動詞不定式。
