1. English is now used by nearly a quarter of the world’s population, and anywhere you go in the world,… 有近四分之一的世界人口在用英語，而且不論你到哪里······
1）quarter意為“四分之一”，three quarters意為“四分之三”，分別與one fourth和three fourths同義。
“a/one quarter of＋名詞”作主語時，謂語動詞的形式應根據of后面的名詞的形式而定。當該名詞是可數名詞復數時，謂語動詞用復數形式；當該名詞是不可數名詞時，謂語動詞用單數形式。
Only a quarter of the water is drinkable.
只有四分之一的水可飲用。
One quarter of the students in this class come from the countryside.
這個班上四分之一的學生來自農村。
2) population 是集體名詞，意為“人口；人口數量” 用作主語時，謂語動詞用單數。當分數詞修飾population時，則謂語動詞一律用復數形式。表示增長用grow. 表示“······的人口” 可用“the population of / in+地名”結構。表示人口的多或少不用much或little，而用large或small。提問人口多少用what，其固定句型為“What’s the population of...? ”。
