1. Please reply in writing to this invitation by Friday, December 20th.
1) reply in writing表示“以書面的形式進行回復”。其中reply 相當于answer， 但要比后者更加書面化且正式許多。此處介詞in表示方式，相當于漢語“用……方式（形式）”的意思。
2) reply用作動詞時，不直接跟賓語，須由介詞to引入賓語的內容，構成reply to…結構。例如：
Did you reply to these letters?
3) 在此句中，介詞by意為“截止至……；到……為止”。介詞before也有“……之前”的意思。但區別于before不包含其后的時間，而by則包括。試比較：
You should get your homework ready by Friday.

寫作指導：
本題要求寫兩個小作文，一個是邀請他人參加聚會或活動的信函；另一個是答復伙伴的邀請信。
首先, 認真閱讀邀請信所包含的內容：聚會或活動的類型；舉辦的時間與地點；客人是否需帶禮物；客人是否需答復此信；何時及如何答復此信。
參照3a寫一個包含上述內容的邀請信，注意運用提示詞語。
1. Making invitations 發出邀請
“Do you have any plan next Friday night? We are having some friends over for a dinner party. Would you like to join us?”
“Are you free next Friday night?”
“Are you doing anything Friday night?”
“Would you be interested in coming to our house that night?”
“How do you like to join our party Friday night?”
“Would you like to...”
2. Accepting invitations 接受邀請
“I’d love to, thank you.”
“That’s very kind of you, thanks.”
“It sounds great, thank you.”
“That will be lovely, thank you.”
“That’s great, thank you.”
“What a good idea, thank you.”
3. Declining invitations 拒絕邀請
“That’s very kind of you, but actually I’m planning to see my grandma next Saturday.”
“I’m really sorry, but I have to do something else on next weekend.”
“I really don’t think I can make it—I am supposed to be at airport picking up my friend next Sunday morning.”
